Ruby hues stared at her broken heart she held in
her arms. No sound, not even breathing, could
be heard. Out of the sockets of her shocked and
distraught eyes only water cascaded down onto the
long lost dragon child. Her bloodied claws gripped tightly
onto the beautiful flesh of the boy; what was once pure
and overflowing with power, love, and life now turned
lethargic, the inevitability of decay creeping up like
the putrid monster death was. The once loud and arrogant
screams of soldiers and commanders all seemed to
hush down, Camilla couldn’t hear anything, refused
to even.
Was there any point to fight anymore? The one person
so precious and dear to her soul was ripped from
her arms. She couldn’t protect him. But, she could protect
him from the damn mosquitos which seemed to make their
way through the slightly broken crack of his bedroom
window. She could protect him from the cold, Autumn
breeze which swooped right through the holes of his
sweater. The burning sun which imprinted him with
red and painful marks was no match for his big sister.
Whenever he would fall asleep on the sofa by the
glowing fire, she was the first one to cover up his
whole frame with a fluffy blanket. Before the candles
were blown out, a “tender kiss for the prince” was a must.
But there was one thing she could not protect him from;
death himself, selfishly deciding peoples’ fates. And there
was nothing even Camilla could do about it. As he lay in her
still, motherly, and warm arms, her head sunk to the nape
of his neck, face distorting as her teeth clenched, grinding
through the blare beginning to break out.
There were no words to come out, no words could
ever do justice to the feeling of pure pain and dread
which infected her fragile heart; poisoning the very
roots of her being. No, no words could ever come close.
The eldest sister only held the boy close to her, not
caring if an enemy were to strike her too.
